2 String Alfalfa Bales

Looking for good-quality alfalfa hay that is easy to order and easy to handle? Our 2 string alfalfa bales are baled tight, stored dry and sold straight from our family farm. Each bale averages about 60 lbs, so it is simple to lift, stack and feed. Whether you have one horse or a whole herd, you can order from 1 ton up to 20 tons and choose between first cut and second cut.

Why Choose Our Alfalfa

Alfalfa is one of the most popular hays for horses, cattle and goats. Animals enjoy the taste, and it is known as a rich, leafy forage. Here is what you can expect from our bales:

•Baled tight, so they hold their shape and stack neatly

•Stored dry to help keep the hay fresh and clean

•About 60 lbs per bale, easy for one person to handle

•Available in first cut and second cut

•Sold by the ton, from 1 to 20 tons

•Local delivery available

First Cut or Second Cut?

First cut is the first harvest of the season. It is often a little more stemmy and fibrous, and many owners like it for animals that do not need extra richness. Second cut usually comes in softer and leafier, with finer stems that many animals find extra tasty. Every season and every field is different, so if you are not sure which to choose, call us. We will tell you what we have on hand and what we would suggest for your animals.

Who Is It For?

Our alfalfa suits horses, cattle and goats. If your animal has special dietary needs, for example a horse with a health condition, check with your vet before changing its feed. We are always happy to answer questions about our hay.

How Much Hay Will I Need?

Here is a rough guide. Many horse owners feed about 1.5 to 2 lbs of hay for every 100 lbs of body weight each day. That means a 1,000 lb horse eats roughly 15 to 20 lbs a day, so one 60 lb bale lasts about three to four days. A ton is around 33 bales. Needs change with age, work and season, so treat these numbers as a starting point. If you have a larger herd, ordering 5, 10 or more tons saves you from reordering often.

Quality You Can See

We want you to feel good about every bale. Good alfalfa should look green, smell fresh and sweet, and feel soft rather than dusty or damp. If you ever have a concern about your order, tell us right away and we will work with you.

Storage Tips

To keep your hay in the best condition, store it dry and off the ground, on pallets or a raised platform, under a roof or a tarp with room for air to move around. Keep it away from rain and standing water. Before feeding, look at each bale and skip any that feel damp, smell musty or show mold.
